Expression Lines or Lines at Rest? What Muscle Relaxation Can and Cannot Change
Botulinum toxin relaxes targeted muscles, so it suits lines tied to movement. Learn how to tell movement lines from lines at rest, and what to do around an injection.

Botulinum toxin works on muscles, so it fits lines that deepen when you move a particular muscle better than lines that stay visible on a still face. Small amounts of purified toxin are injected into targeted facial muscles to relax them temporarily, which lets the lines that muscle creates soften. It relaxes muscle; it does not fill the skin or add volume. A line that is still there when your face is relaxed may involve more than muscle movement, so how much it will change is for the clinician to judge on your face, not something to assume.

What the toxin acts on
The target is the muscle. The aim is to relax only the chosen muscles and leave the neighboring ones working, so that natural expression stays. That is an aim rather than a guarantee, which is why it is worth asking how your brow and eyelid positions will be taken into account. If a neighboring muscle is weakened by mistake, a temporarily droopy brow or eyelid can result; this is rare. The treatment does not dull your sense of touch in the area.
Movement lines and lines at rest, compared
| What you notice | What it may point to | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| A line appears or deepens only when you frown, squint or raise your brows | A line linked to that muscle's movement | Which muscle drives it, and how will my brow position be considered? |
| A line stays visible with a relaxed face | Movement may be only part of the cause | How much change is realistic for this line? Do not expect it to disappear. |
| Lines in both situations | A mix of movement and something else | Which part is muscle-related, and what is the plan for the rest? |
A two-minute mirror check before you book
In daylight, look at your face relaxed, then while you frown, squint and raise your brows. Note which lines show only in motion and which remain when your face is still. Also notice how your brows and eyelids sit now, so a change afterward is easy to spot. This is an observation tool for the consultation, not a diagnosis.
Describe what you see in specific terms, such as "deep when I frown, faint when my face is still." That separates movement from rest and gives the clinician something concrete to assess. "Make it disappear" gives them nothing to work with and sets an expectation no one can promise.
Around the injection: do and avoid
- Do not rub or massage the injected areas, and do not press or rub makeup into them. The point is to keep the product where it was placed.
- Hold off on heavy lifting, workouts and anything else that raises your heart rate until your clinician says it is fine. Ask for the exact time before you leave.
- Have it done by a licensed doctor in a medical setting. Never accept injections at a spa, party, salon or someone's home, and never buy toxin online for injection; reported complications include long-term muscle paralysis, Bell's palsy and permanent eye damage.
- Swelling, redness, soreness, bruising and a mild headache can follow and are usually mild and temporary. If the area becomes red or sore, feels hot and swollen, has green or yellow pus, or you feel unwell or have a fever, contact the clinic or a doctor right away. If one brow or eyelid starts to droop, call the clinic.
- If you have trouble breathing, swallowing or speaking, get emergency care immediately rather than waiting for a callback from the clinic.

Bring a short list to the visit: any earlier injections with their dates and where they were done, anything unusual that followed, your regular medicines and any allergies. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own before or after the visit. Tell the clinician and ask the prescriber if it needs to change.
FAQ
Will I be unable to show expression?
The aim is to relax only the targeted muscles so natural expression remains. Ask how the plan protects the movements you want to keep.
Can a resting line be handled the same way?
Not necessarily. A line that stays visible at rest may not come from muscle movement alone. Ask which of your lines are muscle-driven and what the plan is for the rest.
